-Changes and Future Prospects of Maritime Development
Under the triple impact of the COVID pandemic, fierce war between Ukraine and Russia, and severe climate changes, the maritime industry is faced with unprecedented challenges and an unpredictable future.
Nowadays, over 80 percent of global trade by volume is carried by maritime transport vessels and the maritime industry accounts for 3.5 to 7 percent of global GDP. It is one of the backbone of the global economic system. However, the sectors are heavily dependent on the marine environment to generate economic value while the above-mentioned disruptions affect the stability and sustainability of the marine environment. Additionally, hampering the production chain of the global marine related industry.
On the other hand, under the influence of global warming, tourism resources such as coral reefs that coastal areas depend on for a living are being seriously threatened. Overfishing is also gradually endangering the diversity of marine life. According to research, there is a decline of 49% of marine populations between 1970 and 2012. These statistics indicate the urgent need for the world to protect the marine environment.
In this committee, delegates are encouraged to discuss a series of issues such as the possibility of alternate routes for transporting cargo, constant shortages of equipment in maritime transport, environmental problems caused by overfishing and so on from a different perspective. Apart from solving the current problems, the dais also expect delegates to find ways to keep the sustainability of the maritime economy.
