Various efforts were taken to expedite the process. In 1963, this committee approved a revised list of 64 territories by the application of the 1960 Declaration on Decolonization and instituted the Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24). Four decades later, 54 territories attained the self-governing status, which appeared quite promising.

However, after Timor-Leste’s independence in 2002, no further progress was developed while 17 territories remained under non-self-governing status. Hence, protecting the legal rights and well-being of the territory residents is the challenge delegates will take on this year.
