United Nations Security Council

About the Committee.

      The Security Council (SC) is set to prevent global security from being threatened, or taking actions when required. The charter suggests the United Nations to have the following purposes:

  1. Maintain international peace and security;

  2. Develop friendly relations among nations;

  3. Cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights;

  4. Be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations.

      This council aims to fulfill the mission of the UN with its exclusive execution power. It is the only UN operative body to have the authority to pass a resolution that possesses mandate power, which every member states agree to follow. When an issue emerges, the council usually gradually apply ways to deal with the rising problem, starting from prompting peace talks, performing an investigation and try to achieve a pacific settlement. However, should hostile scenario occurs, the Council’s task is to prompt a satisfying end by issuing ceasefire directives or sending peacekeeping forces to reestablish peace. It may even impose enforcement measures, including Economic sanctions, arms embargoes, financial penalties and restrictions, travel bans, severance of diplomatic relations, blockade, or collective military action.

The Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962

      After WWII, the US and the USSR contested the dominance of military and politics of the world, which then caused a series of conflicts. Of all, the Cuban Missile Crisis is considered the highest peak, the very time that the world was close to a nuclear war.
The two superpowers relatively deployed missiles in order to possess more superiority in negotiating and bargaining. The Crisis broke out as the Soviet Union missile deployment in Cuba was disclosed.

      Returning to 1962, delegates have to be aware of every decision you make while facing such a tense situation. How should the two sides as well as the Third World interact, which could possibly lead to a whole different ending?
